Rosa Illán has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to develop a project related to her PhD thesis on TIME and SPACE at UCSD CogSci. The project, which will be supervised by Professor Rafael Núñez, aims to improve our understanding of human creativity by studying how we imagine and represent time in spatial terms (“Spring will arrive in two weeks”; “We are approaching Sunday”; “Two hours fly by when you’re having fun”), based on linguistic and gestural data.
The main objective is to design an experimental study that will validate Rosa’s hypotheses about the meanings that spatial concepts acquire when they are used to talk about time. For this, it will be necessary to control the multiple variables that have emerged from corpus-based studies previously developed in CREATIME.
This work will contribute to Rosa’s PhD thesis on linguistic patterns for the expression of the motion of time units. It will also allow her to prepare projects for her postdoctoral phase, to be funded for one year after completion of her doctorate by her Fundación Séneca Fellowship. Rosa will be a Fulbright Fellow at the Cognitive Science Department of the University of California San Diego from August 2021 to July 2022.
