Irene will be a Séneca Foundation Fellow at the Department of English Philology at the University of Murcia from April 2022 to March 2026.
Irene Bolumar has been awarded a fellowship by the Fundación Seneca (Séneca Foundation), the research foundation of the Regional Government of Murcia, to develop her PhD thesis on the multimodal profiles of English perception verbs (hear, see, touch, taste, smell, etc.) at the University of Murcia.
The project will be supervised by two Daedalus Lab team members (Javier Valenzuela and Daniel Alcaraz). Its main aim is to study polysemy in English perception verbs (such as in the case of touch which can also mean ‘to affect emotionally’) considering verbal and non-verbal elements used by speakers in natural communication. In other words, this work intends to analyse in detail how speakers distinguish the meanings of English perception verbs by means of multimodal communication.
This empirical study entails great scientific interest due to the innovative combination of features analysis it presents. The utilisation of big data technologies will contribute to the improvement of theoretical frameworks established in this field of research.
